I bought a pair of 90% wool/nylon long underwear pants. These are thin and machine washable. For riding it is best to buy them on the long side. They provide a surprising amount of warmth without bulk. I also have a cotton blend waffle weave pair but too bulky under jeans.

One of my daughters rarely rides in the winter and can stay warm using her snowboarding clothing. For couple hours in 10 to 20 degrees.

She's a very colorful addition to the mob of us in Carhart clothing, too. We can spot her easily!

Sierra Trading Post

They sell closeouts and 2nds of Carhartt clothing. I just paid $24 for a pair of insulated overalls for my oldest kid.

A pair of $100 bogs were less than $7 because they were slightly dirty (uh yeah.. considering that the kid wore them out to the pigpen 5 minutes after getting them, a little dirt is nothing).
