Weird bit-don't know what to call it

I was at a show today, it was the day for jumpers. I saw one girl on a horse using a figure 8 noseband with some weird D ring snaffle that had 3 mouthpieces. It was like those double twisted wire ones but smooth with 3 mouthpieces. The poor horse had the figure 8 trying to close his mouth around the bit when he couldn't because it was so big in his mouth!

Anyone know what kind of bit it is??
    Thanks!

Yes, like that, but with 3 mouthpieces.

What the hay? That's really weird. I can't see a third mouthpiece doing anything differently from the bit that NBE posted aside from, well, adding bulk as you said. If anyone knows different I'm interested as well!

Jam the roof of the horse's mouth in three different places. That's why he held is mouth open, trying to escape it.

I don't think he could even close his mouth around it. I felt so bad for him :( His mouth was open with the figure 8 trying to close it the entire day...
