Western Saddle Fit - Bars too wide or too narrow? With Pics

Hello,

I'm having some difficulty trying to fit a saddle to this mare with fairly wide withers. I've been reading all I can on the subject, but I can't find much on how much pressure you should feel on the bars.

This saddle is supposed to be a 6.5" gullet - "Quarter Horse bars", but it measures closer to 7".

I am thinking it may be too narrow, as there is a fair bit of pressure behind my hand (see photo). Is that... normal? Or should there be almost NO pressure?

It seems to fit across her back until the very back end, and then it lifts off of her a bit. Which makes me think this is too wide and tilted forward?

So, what do you guys think - too wide, too narrow, or fits? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

My gelding has very wide shoulders and a low wither, I ended up buying a saddle with Full QH bars and it fits perfect. It's really hard to tell from photos if a western saddle fits right unless it's something glaringly obvious.

If its tight when you run your hand under the flare, then it's too tight for the horse. You can have a wide gullet fit but if the flare in the skirt is narrow it will pinch. I've found that the best indicator is to ride the horse in the saddle and if it's pinching down on the shoulders the horse will let you know.....hopefully not by bucking ofcourse;)

.

It looks like the Saddle is too narrow, but it also looks like your Horse has his head down, so cannot say for sure
