Question Western saddle fit trouble

I'm really not the best when it comes to fitting tack. I know what it is, where it goes, how to use it and that's about it. On top of that I have a slightly downhill quater horse, he is very round, his back end and stomach area very wide but has a narrow wither area. This makes finding a western saddle very hard. I have tried several saddles and every single one seems fine when I place it on his back without a saddle pad and not cinched. Once I put the pad on and tighten the cinch, it all leans foward. I have even tried different saddle pad thickness. When you sit in the saddle you feel so upright and off balance its horrible. Not to mention he acts up. I have had better luck fitting in with an english saddle. I've ridden him in several english saddles and found many have fit fine and were very comfortable for him and myself.

I've talked to many 'horsey' people about this issue and some say a riser pad will be the only way to get the saddle to fit because of his slight downhill back and narrow withers. Others say a pad will never fix the problem and the problem lies with the saddle itself and I have to just keep looking for the right fit. So I'm not sure what to do.. I've never had a horse that was so hard to find a fitting saddle for!

Or maybe he is just meant to be english!

Sounds like the Saddles you have tried where too wide, probably a Full-Qh, this will cause the Saddle to be tilt down in the front and will pinch him because only part of the bars are making contact.

See diagram, if the Horse is narrow a wide saddle falls down in front, if the horse is wide a narrow saddle perches up in front

I would try a Semi-QH Saddle on him

downhill horse, english, hard, saddle fit, western
