Personally, if its an unknown quantity, I'd get teeth checked first, and speak to the dentist too. Some people whack a thick bit in a mouth, thinking this is kinder. Sometimes, yes, but if the horse doesn't have the room in his mouth, he can try to push his tongue over the bit, or hang his tongue out the side of his mouth- this then causes the bit to be uneven- one side trying to get through a tongue, the other side going on a gum. Not comfy.
I prefer to start anything, and ride anything in a snaffle where possible.
Yes, as I said she has been ridden in a tom thumb (and is what I rode her in). But she has also been ridden in 1 or 2 other bits, but I don't know what they are because she was ridden in them in pictures. She's 9 and from what the vet said she has a nice mouth, with no problems. And im am going to do Eventing, Show Jumping & mounted games once or twice a month :)
