What kind of bridle?

I want a new bridle but I'm not sure what to get. I originally was going to go with a regular french style cavesson but I really like figure 8 bridles too. Problem is, they are alot more expensive. I can't find one under $200 :(. I do alot of trail riding, and cantering/galloping. I would like the figure 8 cause it seems like a more comfortable style when doing that kind of work. Is it aloud in the eq. Ring though? I would either do that or jumpers if I showed and if I do get to start showing I don't want to have to buy a new bridle. The cheapest leather one I saw was a collegiate, and that was $100. I can't seem to find many used either. So, should I go ahead and get the figure 8 or just use a normal bridle?

Before you decide on a flash or drop or fig 8, I ask WHY do you want one? What purpose does it serve for YOUR horse specifically? I'm a strong believer in riding in minimal tack and accessories whenever possible and frequently school my hunter pace/jumper in just a mullen snaffle, curb rein out of use, no noseband at all, no martinagles, etc.

If you want something for LOOKS, I ask you to PLEASE first learn about it's EFFECTS on horse and rider.

Using unnecessary tack imo is one of the best ways to teach a horse to evade the aids. And one of the hardest things to correct.

I always tell my students unless you can give me a good solid honest reason that is 100% sound and convincing as to WHY you use the tack you use, I make them stick with a basic cavesson, bridle, reins, and bit.

Even my hot hot hot hunter pace/jumper who goes XC in a 5pt breastcollar, running martingale, ad fig 8 goes at home in what I said above - mullen snaffle no accessories, at all. Why does he use them XC? Because he is hot and when we're on a 12 mile hunter pace jumping obstacles 3'+ that are solid items all at speed, I want the emergency brake there if I need it. Good thing is thanks to the time and training I put into him without any of that stuff, I rarely (if ever) need it.

Well, I need a new bridle because the one he is using is the only one that fits my mare. It is just a nylon western headstall but it is cob sized so it fits my arab mare. I was interested in a figure 8 for him because I want him to be comfortable on the trails and I heard that figure 8's let them breath more freely.

A figure 8 holds the jaw shut and is designed to keep the horse's mouth closed on the bit. A regular noseband should never be adjusted to interfere with breathing. If it is, it is way too tight.

Sounds like a regular noseband is fine for you.
