I've looked this up and I'm getting a variety of answers. When measuring and english saddle. Where do I start? Front, middle, or back of the button? It's a 17.5 at the back of the button and 18" at the front. I'm terribly confused. :?
Middle. Because if the saddle has an oval head nail the discrepancy's even bigger.
Main problem is the head nails rarely go in the same place twice. On most English saddles if you look down the tree from the rear you'll see the nails aren't level, and you quite often get different 'lengths' depending which side of the pommel you measure from.
I know that's not very helpful but saddle makers often aren't. Just to give a typical example, I have a Jeffries Falcon Hawk Event in bits. It measured a good 18" before I started, but guess what?
When I got down to the bare tree, in large black letters was writ '17 1/2" '.
Just put a note on your listing that it measures 18, but you found the saddle is stamped with the smaller size.
If you ever buy an Ideal saddle always expect to to measure 1/2" bigger than the stated size, because they always do.
