I'm riding a pony a few times a week for a woman I know and she uses this bit on him. What type of bit is this and how does it work?

It look like a Junior Cow Horse 3/8" Twisted Sweet Iron Dog Bone Snaffle:

Reinsman says it "Helps in getting your horse's legs underneath him and his rear end down. The short gag action collects a horse well. Three-piece mouth adds a little "bite" to this low leverage bit for more control."

Personally, I greatly prefer this version of a Jr Cow Horse:

But if the pony and its owner prefer the twisted wire style, you may not have any choice. I will say that my mare loves having a big copper roller to play with. This is mine:

A Jr. Cow horse bit is one of my favorite bits. However I don't like twisted wire. I much prefer the bit that bsms posted.

Are you asking if you direct rein or neck rein with the Jr Cowhorse? Or a snaffle bit?

You do realize that a true snaffle big does not have shanks. The Jr Cowhorse is a curb bit because it has shanks and leverage.

Some people will tell you that you should not direct rein in any curb bit. I disagree with that and say it depends on the bit. Because of the independent action of the shanks , I say it is perfectly fine to both direct rein and neck rein in the Jr Cowhorse ... Or a snaffle bit for that matter.

Do you direct/ neck rein in the Cowhorse bit? I direct rein with this bit on the pony because he doesn't neck rein. He does okay in this bit but sometimes he seems a little confused about what I want him to do and he braces against it sometimes.
