I would be afraid to put a screw bit in their mouth. Won't it cut their lips? What is the purpose of it?

Wow, and that chain mouth one is also a gag bit. As if the chain itself wasn't enough. :,,(

    Disgusting.

FP, I think the only purpose of that is to dominate a horse through pain. I can't imagine that anyone could really accomplish anything by using that bit except to have a very hard mouthed horse after a while from all the scar tissue.

So, the same method as using fear to dominate a horse?

What's the purpose of twisted wire, super long shanks, cable tie dows, studded nose bands, etc? They're all made to "control" the horse.

It's like some jackass went rummaging through the barn and just welded a bunch of crap together.

Amen. It'd take a real class act to even think of putting that in any horse's mouth.

    Trained
Believe it or not, peope do - why? Beacuse they are taught that the bit fixes the horse..not educated, persistant, consistant riding.

And the question really is.....if the horse reflect the rider 100% of the time....theen, isn't it really the rider who needs to be corrected????

    I say yes.

I also see bits like that used on Mules. Who knows why? I've grown up breaking and training mules, and they are just as horses, if you ride them correctly, they give you the correct answers.

Peope make me shake my head in confusion.

I've seen that too. Mules are smarter than horses, therefore tougher to break They actually need to trust you, and if they want you off, you're coming off.

People who break mules around here actually break them. One or two have gotten killed.

I think (but don't hold me to it...) it was Meredith Hodges (?) who said something along the lines of "you have to train a mule the way you should thrain a horse." Whoever said it, I've always liked the quote, even though I don't have mules.
