I don't have the money for a new helmet either. Luckily my mom has agreed to buy me a new one since I explained to her why mine isn't good to use anymore.

I usually replace mine every two years or so. However, I did buy a new Charles Owen about three years ago and a month right after buying it I was schooling for an upcoming dressage show as I normally would. I had a nasty fall, which still isn't certain how it happened, but basically I landed on my head. After an ambulance ride to the emergency room, I had my head and neck x-rayed. I had a concussion with a pulled or strained neck muscle as they put it. We had the helmet checked (even though we planned to throw it out anyway) just out of curiosity, and it was thoroughly destroyed. I was pretty glad that it was new and not old. So, after realizing that helmets don't really last long, I replace them pretty often when necessary. :]

Yikes, I'm glad you're ok, HLS!! How scary!
That's why I recommend replacing them that often, I'd rather put money into a new helmet that might save my life and miss a few dinners or movies out, personally.

I read somewhere (I may be wrong) that you should replace your helmet every 6 years, or right away after a fall. I had my german helmet for about 9 years, before it became too small and just recently bought a new riding helmet.

I recently got a new one, about almost 2yrs ago? Yeah, that's not that recent...but before that one, I wore the same one for about three & 1/2 years. They can last awhile.

Now, I've only fallen on this one not too many times...I don't think I'll be replacing it anytime soon. I guess it depends. I think that if you replace it every few years, when it is 'worn' or gets cracked (like if you fall, depending on the force) that's good.

For some reason I thought I read that you have to replace it every 4-5 years...I dunno though. Haha I've been riding for 6 years and had three helmets. The first one died after almost 5 years, then the second one was cracked after I fell off twice, headfirst both times, and now I have an IRH that is too small. So hopefully four soon! (I wanna get a CO, lol)

How do you tell if the inside is decomposed/damaged without breaking open the helmet?

I've fallen off a good fourteen times in my old helmet. I'd never heard that you were suppoused to get a new one after a fall until recently. . Hehe. I've been looking to replace it for a while and finally got a new helmet. It was an adjustable helmet, and I had a bad fall off Gonzo and the plastic thing that you turn to adjust it broke. Thank god the store let me replace it!

I replace mine every few falls depending on how bad the fall is, I don't like to wait on replacing a helmet, it has saved my life way too many times to not replace it regularly.
