Wide saddle horn purpose?

Well, We picked up two, brand new saddles at an auction for 200 bucks apiece, Only one of the saddles had the company name, which was Western Saddlery and we were told they were selling them since the company was going out of business. Anyway the saddle horns are very large and thick. Would that be just decoration or is there some purpose to the huge saddle horns?
Thanks in advance!

Usually a big sturdy horn is used in roping and towing things with your horse.

^Exactly.

A horn like that is far sturdier than say a horn on a barrel racing saddle.
