Winter Blanketing??

Not too sure if this is the right place for this I'm new haha

I just bought my first horse, a 5yr old partially clipped, slightly underweight and unconditioned TB gelding, and I don't know much about blanketing. He's used to having a fairly light blanket and living out, but he'll be stabled at night where I'll be boarding in a pretty warm barn.

I bought him a 1200 d shell and just wondering if I should put a liner or stable blanket underneath? Where I live it can go down to about -30 in the winter..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You said a 1200 d. A far as I know, that's to relation of what strength the nylon of the sheet it. Do you know the weight of it?

Since this is sale time on winter blankets it's a good time to pick up a liner. I wouldn't use it until the temps drop below -20 C. To help him gain weight be sure he has access to hay 24/7. Use several small mesh hay nets in his stall and stuff them as hard as you can. Because it slows down consumption he will better digest it which means his body has access to more nutrients.
