Wow. Saddle fit story...

So I'd been having some difficulty with the english saddles that I have access to not fitting Lacey perfectly but I had been riding in the one that fit ok up until June-ish when I tried her in a western saddle (they have one that actually fit her well) and she did much better.

Well, the other day I decided to pull out one of the english saddles because I hadn't ridden english all summer and I missed it. Yeah, that wasn't going to happen. She had gained so much muscle on her back and shoulders that the saddle that came with her last year literally sat about 10 finger spaces above her withers and the other one, that had previously fit better than that one, would have bridged quite a bit if I had gotten into the saddle, it also sat about 6ish fingers above her withers.
I was quite surprised and bummed. I personally love riding english and I think Arabs look better english but I'm not going to torture her because of my wants.

I thought I just post this as a warning to anyone who rides their horse in a saddle that fits "ok". You could be really hindering your horses muscle growth and not even know, just like I was. Just saying.

Especially don't make the stupid mistake we did with my daughter's 4 year old horse. Got him a saddle that fit and forgot that he was growing and it might not fit when he was six. Now we need to get him a new saddle. I really hate saddle shopping.

Yep, that is why I stress so much to anyone that they should have a professional come and asess their saddle or saddles on their horse's back before purchase.

It sucks! I am going through saddle finding woe's myself. My Wintec 500 Event Saddle's tree is too strait. While his back archs.

I have had the HDR Advantage on his back and it fits great. The Wintec Close Contact and the Collegiate Convertible as well, and they fit great.

Hard part is finding them used at decent prices for me.

Great fun.

How can you tell if it fits? My lease horse has a really cheap saddle.. and I'm always worried that her saddle doesn't fit her.. but I don't want to say anything to the owner cause apparently it fits her "fine". I just wish I could tell myself.
I know it definitely does not fit me though! Haha.

I just took pictures of the english saddles (from the side with and without padding, and from the back and front sides) and posted them on here because I had no idea how to fit an english saddle.

With the western saddle it seems to be a bit easier. I just made sure there was adequate wither clearance, that it sat on her back instead of popping up as it sat there... There was a really extensive helpful post someone posted awhile ago... I think it was Liberty Valence or something like that and it was super helpful. It had lots of pictures and stuff. =)

The quickest way to get a jist on if your saddle fits or not, try this...

Put the saddle on without a pad. You should be able to fit 4 fingers vertically in the arch of the pommel, so, between your horses withers and the top of the pommel. Then standing behind your horse looking through the saddle (you may need a stool, I do for my horse, and let him know your there!!) you should be able to see daylight.

Start with that. If you neither of those things fit your horse, then you may want to say something to the owner.

Yeah you can see right through the middle of the saddle no problem. Theres probably even more than 4 fingers that will fit (though my fingers are skinny)
