Lightbulb yet another bit question (KK Ultra)

Hey everyone!
Yet another bitting question for you...has anyone ever tried/heard of/had experiences with the KK Ultra bit made in Germany? I went to the tack shop just to browse bits, as I want to keep my boy in a snaffle, but wanted just a tiny bit more control. The girls sales pitch was very good and it sounds like a great bit (it's double jointed in the middle to apply more even pressure on the tongue than the traditional single split snaffle) but at $140 CAN I'd like to get some feedback before I spend that kind of cash (remember, no money, all spent on horse :) Thanks!

Herm Sprenger KK Ultra's are my absolute favorite bit! The majority of the horses I ride love it and go very nicely in it and if I remember correctly the Spanish Riding school start their stallions with these bits. While it may not be enough bit for a hotter more powerful horse it's just fine for most, even those with a very sensitive mouth. They are expensive but I've been able to find most of mine (loose rings) on ebay or tacktrader.com for about $60-75. Exept for the D rings or full cheeks, those are always more! I'd recommend this bit to just about anyone!

Oh wonderful! I found a few on ebay, and it turns out my local tack shop rents them on a weekly basis. I rented one and now I can't wait to try it out, I think my little guy is going to love it (he has a white face and very soft mouth, which apparently go hand in hand?) Thanks for the reply, any others more than welcome!

Broken Wings,
There is a JP bit that has a lozenge and double joints, with copper alloy surface. US $29. It only comes in one diameter, and is close to the thicker KK. I switched to this, and it made a world of difference with one horse that had been on a standard snaffle. It also comes in an eggbutt.

Wow, they look the same and what a price difference! Do you think the KK is so expensive because it's imported, what's the deal?

I LOVE the KK Ultra. It's the most amazing bit I have ever put in my horse's mouth. She absolutely loves it and is much softer in the bridle with it. I have a knockoff (just a french link with the same material) for my smaller mare and it works pretty much the same, although I do feel some difference.

If you can afford one, go for it! You won't regret it!

I don't know how old it is, but Jordan uses a KK Ultra Universal and it looks like it's in good shape.

It's a great bit. However if you can't afford the KK, definitely get the JP by Korsteel bit that was posted. I have that bit and my horse loves it!

I think I may just bite the bullet and buy the KK....the reviews are very positive, plus I have a gift certificate that has been burning a hole in my pocket for ages. It all depends on how our ride goes tomorrow, I'll update. Wish me luck please!

Herm Sprenger (the maker of the KK Ultra) always talk about the angle of the middle piece and how it's set at a different angle from other bits which make it better. Don't really know much about that though. One thing I noticed about HS bits... If you get a "regular" bit and you hold them by the rings and you twist the bit around, the joints "lock" up. If you do that to a HS the joints are very fluid and smooth and kind of glide against each other without locking. I so wish I could explain that properly. Again, don't khow how much that really comes into play but horses really seem to LOVE my HS's.
