I'm looking for a new close contact. I want a nice one. I've had kind of a "no name" brand and it just does not compare to riding in my friend's Pessoa or M. Toulouse. I am wanting a saddle i can show in for hunters and jumpers (though it may be a but far off). The highest i jump now is 2'6 but i would definitely like to go to at least 3' in the future...The saddle can be used but in good condition. I just really don't know much about the quality of saddles. What would be the best saddle to get in my price range? I found a Bates Caprilli with the adjustable gullet system that had only been used a few times for about 850. Is that a good deal? Also, where do you look for saddles online? I have been using Craigslist but the selection has been limited. Posted via Mobile Device
That sounds rather high for a used Caprilli. When I was considering them, I found several in the 600-700 range. Also, they have CAIR panels that you either love or hate. For $800, I highly recommend Toulouses, or even Collegiates. The downside to these is that both (correct me if I'm wrong) have foam panels that cannot be reflected.
I had a Collegiate senior event that I adored, and my friend rides hunters in a Collegiate Diploma. The older Collegiates are very nice--before the gullet change systems, the leather was beautiful. I would hesitate to buy one of the newer models.
I'm a big Toulouse fan. I tried several of the newer grippy ones but hated the feeling of the leather. However, a friend sold me an older Celine with the full-grain leather flaps that I like much better. They hold their value well without breaking the bank.
Pesos as are also great saddles, but most are probably above the $800 mark used. It's still worth looking into.
Make sure the saddle fits your horse well. Good luck!
My friend has a beautiful Mondega in near new condition right in your price range. Super comfortable, thigh and knee block and a deep seat. I will pm you the link
Thank you for the replies. I'm going to go to the local tack shop and sit in some saddles. Then I will see if I can find the same model used online. One more question. I don't have a horse anymore and I will be riding a lot of different horses. I don't think I'll be getting another horse anytime soon. Do you think I should get a medium or wide tree? Very few horses need a wide tree. Medium in the norm. Adjustable gullets, however, would be a big plus where riding different horses in concerned. The medium-narrow gullet seems to fit your average TB build if that's good visual for you.
Thank you! I have a Wintec with adjustable gullets now, but its an all-purpose I have heard the leather on the newer Bates' Adjustable Gullets is not as nice?
The Dover Circuits are really nice, I borrowed one for a long time and just bought one of my own. I think the older Circuits have a much better leather quality, with the new ones the stirrup leathers seam to rub off the leather dye was to easy. I never had a problem with the one I was using.
Thanks. I have heard Circuits are really nice, and the reviews are excellent. Figures I missed the sale...lol. Do you know what the older model is called?
