5 star all the way!!

If you are doing barrels or roping I would recommend probably the thicker ones. Probably between 3/4- 1 inch thick. Call the number on the website they will tell you more

Another vote for 5 star- scored one brand new a while back at the local consignment tack shop for $100, I LOVE it!

Oh man, I totally did NOT need to see the 5 star website. They make custom mohair girths too.... I want one.

5 Star saddle pads are the best!!! They conform very well to your horses back and are so soft to touch. Love them!!

5 star all the way. I hated my impact gel, it broke down quickly and hardened up on me (forget about riding with one if you have harsh winter weather!). My already sensitive horse turned into a sour, sore backed horse! Bit the bullet and bought a 5 star and it was love at first ride and my horses back issues soon disappeared. I know have 4. My favorite thickness is the 7/8", its just a good all around thickness. I use it for trail riding, barrels, team penning and sorting. I also have a 1" for roping and a 3/4" for light training, flat work and showing. Yes they are pricey but they last forever and don't harden up like other pads do with time.

I have both an Impact Gel and a 5 Star. I love both of the pads.

My only "issue" with the Impact Gel is that it is 1) heavier than the 5 star and 2) comes in only one thickness.

Both pads have held up extremely well for me, but of course you've got to take care of things to make them last, and I do.

Both pads would be a great choice. And I'd ride in them all the time; don't waste your money on getting another pad for regular riding. Use the good pad for regular riding too!

It is not enough to know how to ride; one must know how to fall.
