I like English. I started out western, but pretty soon was dying to do English. The precision and grace of it just captivated me. I took some hunt seat lessons, and although it was pretty tough, I was amazed at how quickly I developed better leg strength, balance, and awareness. I love the look of everything hunter- the riding attire, the tack, the horse...it's just so pretty and lots of fun! I still like western too and do some western pleasure, but in my opinion English is better!
I like the relaxed feeling of western. You listen to and feel the horse. Loose rein, deep seat, and hang on for the ride!
I do like the neatness of English. I've never ridden it but it just seems so polished and professional.
I'm not a fan of contact though. I know some horses like it, some don't.
I'd have to say western though. Posted via Mobile Device
I love both styles, but I mainly ride English. I love the finesse and the closeness I feel to my horse when I ride english style. I have however been doing a little western pleasure work on my mare Belle, it's kind of fun getting that 1-2-3 beat canter, so slow!
I grew up riding Western. While I love the relaxed and comfortable feel of it, I just ordered a new Aussie saddle. I've never tried it before but I've heard good things. I just want to try something that has a little less bulk and weight, and from what I've read from other Aussie riders, it's a good compromise between English and Western.
Where did you order your aussie saddle from, there is a great place here in bc where I got mine from. I got an endurance saddle as its lighter and the panels are shorter and I love it. So comfy I can ride all day. My old Aussie was a knockoff and super heavy.
I'm a western person, it was what I was taught and am comfortable with. Someday when I get the money I'd like to deck Indie in a nice English set and try our hand at playing with it; but I have more uses for my work-style western saddle
English definitely. I think personally it is more of a "workout" for me. I love jumping and the precision that English riding takes. I like the clothing because it is formal yet plain so the horse's beauty can shine.
I do ride western every once in a while, and I think the saddle is definitely more relaxing.
In my area, they have ruined my experience with western pleasure because all the horses have overly low headsets and lopes that aren't even a true gait. Some of the game riders have crazy horses that don't behave. I definitely know all western riders aren't like this, but there are a ton of them in my area, enough to not want to participate while I'm here! I guess the people in my area need some horsemanship lessons...
English is for me, although I enjoy gymkhana games which are usually done in a western saddle. I participate in gymkhanas (in an ENGLISH saddle), dressage, and jumping. I ride a Thoroughbred ex-racer, and I couldn't imagine a western saddle on him ( he's a very English horse:lol Western is fun, though, too!
Western. It seems much more natural to me. English... I don't know. I don't want to insult English riders, but to me it just looks silly and not natural - you're all dressed up in fancy clothing, sit up straight as an arrow, the horses never looks comfortable... Seems too "pristine" to me. I just much prefer western, i feel much closer to the horse, and I feel she would enjoy it much more. Also, I think the tack looks much better Western style. But, to each their own!
I love Western riding, as I have rode this way since I was around 3 or 4 years old. I want to soon learn English, but I feel as if I will always favor western. It is what I have grown up with and it feels natural.
I like both, so couldn't vote. I tell people when they ask which discipline I ride I say what ever saddle you do or don't put on. I've ridden, western (pleasure, barrels, poles, and a small amount of reining and working cows), English (jumping, pleasure, and most flat work (could call it dressage basics)) but I love bareback and have and enjoy riding side saddle both English and western.
