I need advice from someone that knows about horses, so I thought this would be the right place.
I have 5 year old 15.2 hands appaloosa gelding and I was wounder If he will be able to bare a rider wieghing 290 lbs?
I know that some other things factor in with this question, like does he have a short back (yes). Is he healthy ( yes).
He has a very large build and is very muscular. Id say he wieghs close to 1100 lbs.
Any answers would be helpful.

The weight of rider does not matter, if he/she is correctly balanced. A light person would be more detrimental than a heavy person if their weight is not distributed properly. I wouldnt recommend it if this person you talk about does not know a thing about riding. :) If its a fairly experinced rider and knows a bit about balance and having a solid center of balance, then I think it's just fine!

I think the general rule of thumb is 20% of horses weight for heavy work and 30% of horses weight for light work. Thats for a balanced rider and tack. The condition/health of the horse should be taken into consideration and the terrain you are riding on. If you are overloading your horse you should take breaks often, getting off and letting him rest.
