Well, little background...I got Dexter back in September after the horse I leased had to be put down. I didn't have much to spend, so the horses in my price range were looking a bit rough.....Dexter was actually the first we went and saw, and he did come with a bucking problem, not out of pain though, out of being a 6 yr old that never had to really stay in work LOL. I saw a few others after him and they were just complete WRECKS so I was sold on him.
Brought him home and first few weeks were rough with the bucking, but my trainer helped a lot and we got through it...Since September I've been trying to do quite a bit of ground work and desensitizing with him and he's been getting better and better. In our ring, we actually have noodles hanging up, and a bridge to cross, and few other little obstacles. Well First time he met the noodles...wasn't the best...He was aimlessly wandering around checking stuff out (when I first brought him home) and he accidently walked under them...took off bucking thinking he was being attacked!!! So was like ok, we'll leave those alone for awhile, and we worked on some of the other stuff.
Welllll since we signed up today for the judged trail ride....thats in TWO WEEKS...I was like crap, we need to work on some stuff so we don't fail every obstacle!!!!! Well, let me say, I was one proud momma!!!!!!!!!!! OMG, my face is still glowing from how well he did today! HE CONQUERED THE NOODLES!!!! I thought to myself....today....is the day. We're doing it. So after we warmed up some, I took him over the bridge, he does that great! He's funny actually, right after we get off it he will turn around and try to do it again by himself..I think he likes being up higher lol...So after that I was like OK lets do this..and we went to the noodles...slowly at first...then he walked right through like he had done it a million times!!! I was like seriously?!!!!!! LOVE YOU! So we did that a few more times...then went back to our ride and he did awesome canter work WOOT!
So last test was dragging something...I've dragged a few things behind him on the ground before. So I did it from the ground at first, and he was like ZOMG is that going to eat me? Finally he calmed down so I got back on...once I was on and we started dragging it...again, he acted like he done it a million times :) SO PROUD!
We also practiced backing in an L for first time, checking the mail (ya we're cool we have a mailback in our ring :) ), the bridge some more, walking over a pit of waterbottles...haha lots!
SORRRRRRY FOR LONGEST STORY EVER BUT IM SO HAPPY AND PROUD I HAD TO GET IT ALL OUT! I don't have many horsey friends and my boyfriend never understands these moments lol!
Not from today, but super cute and shows how well he puts up with me ha
