Anybody ride in the snow?

Winter is coming... I'd like to read any winter riding WITHOUT the luxury of an indoor stories. Can/do you ride in the snow?

Most definitely!

I love riding in the snow. And I think that it was a huge factor in rehabilitating Stilts after he had ran through a couple of fences and attempting cutting a leg off.

After his surgeries he didn't have the flexibilty and range of motion a normal horse has. Even after spending time flexing those legs every day to regain that it was not until the winter when the snow came and started riding him in it that he made improvements.

The snow forced him to pick those legs up and use them. Especially the snow that had froze and had a crust. Of course I started out slow because of his injuries but by spring and the thaw he was dang near new.

Good to read this. We have been battling grass to grow in our arena since spring. I am hoping the snow will actually make it rideable. Right now it's patchy and rocky. Only the pony can go in there. The horses have not so strong hooves and would get chipped.

I've never ridden in the snow. I live in the desert! It's snowed a few years but I've never ridden in it.

Can I hijack slightly, and ask for those of us who aren't super familiar with snow riding- is there anything we need to know?
We just moved from coastal SC to Spokane, WA, so this will be my 1st winter with a horse and snow. :) My trainer had mentioned Pam spraying the feet prior to riding, if I am remembering correctly, as it helps ot prevent snow and ice build up in their feet.
Any other tips and tricks?

Thanks!
(and thanks for the hijack, hope you didn't mind!)

I love riding in the snow. Of course, I'd rather we had sun 365 days a year here in Ohio, but when it does snow it's fun to ride in.

I love riding the snow! Heres a video I made of me and my ex trainers daughter riding in the rare 9 inches of snow the winter before last! Ignore the horribleness of it. Her friend didn't know to take video and it was on of the first videos I ever made. Yes were riding bareback and I have on fuzzie sleep pants lol
