Anyone having to turn down horses?

In the last couple of weeks I have had to turn down 3 offers for "free" horses. I put the quotes around free since we all know they are really not.

I have my hands full with my two mares one who is currently injured and receiving treatments three times a day. Plus I just put up all the hay I need for the winter and am in middle of changing jobs, in other words I am pretty broke. So even though they may end up being great horses I have had to turn them down.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I know my trainer is has had similar offers that she has had to turn down as she is full, too. It must be the economy plus the regretful results of "lets breed 'em 'cause we got 'em" practices.

We just took in a "free" one the other day that needs a bit of care to fix his feet and who's hocks are fusing. I'm open to taking one more in so long as it's usable for riding lessons or whatever. I don't mind rescuing the occasional horse, but we can't take 'em all in, so we have to be somewhat choosy as to the ones we take.

I can't even go to the feed store without being offered a boatload of free horses every time I do.

People are getting desperate, trying to get horses off their expenses before the coming winter.

I picked up my new foxhunting prospect for just the price of gas to go get him.

Of course, he's with my trainer now for the next 3 to 6 months learning how not to be a race horse, so that's certainly not free!
