Anyone know of any good Dude Ranches?

My dad and brothers are going to Philmont for Boy Scouts this year, so my mom decided us horse ladies (me, mom, and my friend) are going to go to a dude ranch for a few days. But we cannot find any that really suit our needs. First of all, I want an actually dude ranch that is centered around horses. I don't care if they have an Olympic-sized swimming pool and French cuisine. A deep creek and a chicken barbeque will do just as great . Second, we really want to have unlimited riding, where they assign you a horse and you ride when you want, without needing a guide or anything, because I don't want to have to set up my rides days in advance. Just go when we feel like it. And lastly, it can't be uber expensive. Most of the ones I have seen have been about $300+ at the cheapest per night! We did find one that is about $600 for 5 days, $120 a night, and that is pretty good. Anything around that.

And, this may go without saying, but I don't want to be stuck nose-to-tail walking along a dusty road. I want to actually go where I want at what pace I want. We are all good riders, so we don't need pushbutton ponies.

I have been Googling for days, and amazingly, found nothing! Except for that one, but that does have guided rides and they are all planned in advance.

Oh, and I would really love somewhere out West, like Colorado, Texas, Montana, ect. Ect. Not anywhere in the east or south. I live in the east, I've seen enough of that, and the south too, been there.

Thanks!

The only I know of (in Colorado) is pretty much the nose-to-tail riding. They have an overnight camping/riding trip for adults as well.

Good luck!

You can come to my place this summer and I'll give you each a horse to ride and cook you a hamburger at night. Hell for $120 per person I'd take you to the local cafe. Accomodations would be pretty primative though.

I find this agency very helpful

Horseback Riding Tours, Equestrian Vacations and Horse Riding Holidays with Hidden Trails

That said, I did a LOT of research several years ago when my daughter and I decided to go for a week. I wanted LOTS of riding. (you all NOT find unlimited, as far as I know)

THere are a couple that offer many more hours in the saddle than others. We chose one that is, unfortunately now closed and for sale......but there were a couple that offered both AM and Pm rides, which most do not. I have no idea if you are all skilled, but you might look at some that do the cowgirl weeks, or cattle roundups, which we always thought (in out thoroughly eastern, city minds) would be fun. Any you go to will make sure you can ride and most, from my experience, will match you with a horse for a week.. But, what they can allow you to do is really limited, because of our litigious world. THey want to continue to own the ranch, obviously, so they cannot let you just go off when you want.

Good luck,and have fun!

Shoot Kevin-where were you a couple of years ago! That would have been perfect! We would have MUCH rather ridden hard, worked some cows......than just see the scenery. Now it is just not in the cards for either of us...altho I have a feeling the daughter would probably do it at the drop of a hat! We are a couple of country girls stuck in the city!

If I get the same gig this summer that I've had the last two I might just run an ad for that!

Tell you what-you should, altho, you might be sorry with some of what you might get....some girlie girl going "ewwww...." every other second, might not be worth it! Lol (unless of course you WANT to sit her on a horse and just LOOK at her.)
