Oh, and we use a mucking fork to get the ice out - clean of course - but I've used these to reach straight in the buckets before.

(These are my riding gloves, by the way - you might want a different brand to stand up to chores. These have done well, even when I moved 2 ton hay, but I try to treat them gently)

I was at one time a fisherman and we always wore wool gloves in the Winter.
They can get wet and they still keep you just as warm.
