    Black Coat

    Hi,
I have a black TWH, what are some good ways to keep his black coat from fading. He is not a stall horse, luvs the pasture, so sun exposure is a big problem. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can feed him paprika, black oil sunflower seeds and put a sun repellant sheet on him, but he's going to fade if he's outside.

I would say put a sheet on him but he needs to be stalled during the day if you really don't want him to bleach out.

Keeping him out of the sun is the ONLY way to keep him from sun bleaching. Supplements might enhance the color he has, but nothing will prevent it from fading.

If you lay out in the sun all day, even slathered in SPF 100 sunblock, you will still get some color.

My wife has a black horse who looks like a bay in the spring during shedding, but is at his blackest in the summer so sun bleaching is not inevitable.

Keeping them out of the sun is the only foolproof way. But using a high UV blocking fly sheet can help, as well as making sure the horse is getting enough and the proper ratio of vitamins and minerals. Do not feed paprika, or any supplements for coats that have paprika, if you are doing anything that will require, or there is a possibility of your horse being drug tested, your horse will test positive.
