I bought my first horse in November. I spent almost 2 weeks working on ground manners and grooming before I put a saddle on him. I believe the time and effort I spent on those bonding activities have really paid off with his connection to me. You may also want to consider graining him.

Enjoy! He's beautiful.

Something no one told me before I brought home my first horse...be prepared for him to whiney for awhile, missing his former stable mates. My mare was very noisy for several days missing her former mates. Broke my heart at the time. But once she got to know her new mates (at the time dogs and a goat) she was much happier.

Be sure and put back some money. All of us horse people joke about our money pits, but we are serious in a way. My first year owning my horse, I spent a good percentage of the time scratching my head and wondering what the hell I got in to. I refer to my first year of ownership as my breaking in year. Horses have a sixth sense....anytime Major knows that I have to much money in my bank account he helps me out by draining it .

I love him to pieces and it has been a very rewarding experience. I hope to be able to keep him for the rest of his life. However, all horses are money sucking, suicidal creatures, lol.
