I have a 14 year old Morgan gelding who I have had since he was a weanling. He is well trained, great to ride, and smart. He's also very dominant with other horses. My problem is with how the heck to manage him in the pasture.
There is a mare in the pasture next to him that he seems to have a strong bond with. When she is out grazing, he can see her and is fine. However, sometimes she goes into her shed and he cannot see her. When she is out of sight, he paces back and forth and whinnies, almost in a panic. I think the problem is because sometimes the mare is there and sometimes she is not...
My neighbor has a lush green pasture which she's invited me to turn him out on to graze. Well, even if you put another horse with him, because he can't see his "friend" from there, he won't even eat!
He's just fine to load him up and go riding - no whinnying, no missing his buddy, doesn't throw a fit at all.
I don't know what to do for him because I've tried two different "pasture buddies" and he's either too pushy and it becomes a bad situation for the other horse or he doesn't want anything to do with them. I also tried keeping him alone for about six months and he walked the fence for the entire six months.
I can't exactly tell the neighbors how to manage their horses for the benefit of mine, so I'm not sure what to do. The only answer I've currently come up with is to try to sell him, but I'd really rather not!
