Can we put our two horses together?

I have a 6 yr old dominant gelding that is kept with 2 other geldings in a field. Our mare is 4 ..low end and is with 8 other horses in another field. We have trailered out with them a few times and ridden a few times on the property and they have been in adjoining pastures. Last night I left both horses out which I do when weather is not bad. I threw the geldings hay out over the fence and the mare was trying to pull some from under the fence so I went in her outdoor shed with adjoining paddock and pulled her hay out to put on her side of the fence next to the gelding so they could eat together.

He will pick at her but not biting..more like play nipping, she will squeal and that is it. That happens when they are together but see no other signs or aggression. They even eat out of the same haybag when trailering out.
Since they are in separate herds during the day do you think when all the other horses are kept in that they would possibly be ok together at night. That way they could even share the outdoor stall, although my gelding rarely goes in, the mare does spend time in there.

Any opinions or thoughts? It would just make me feel better to know they could both get in if they wanted to although the stall is not terribly large both would fit as there have been two horses in there before.
Thanks!
