Cleaning those 'stained' water buckets

I have a couple of older water buckets just sitting around, and overall, they are in really great shape - they're just really dirty. They have that (what seems like permanent) mud stain/coating on the inside that's nearly impossible to get off. I've tried everything from bleach to regular dish soap to Oxyclean to Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. NOTHING works. I can scrap some off with my fingernails, but I don't feel like scraping 4 entire buckets with my fingernails :)

Just wondering if anybody else came across this, and if there was a MUCH quicker and more effective way of doing this :) Thanks!

Go to the dollar store and buy yourself a scrub brush. Just a brush with good firm bristles to scrub with will do, even a toilet brush will work (a new one). Water, a good scrub brush and some elbow grease should do the trick.

We use an old yucky stiff bristled horse brush. Try soaking them overnight and then going at them. If nothing else, maybe some of that CLR stuff that breaks up calcium deposits. If nothing works, rinse em out and dip some water out. If it looks just as clear as it went in, I don't think it should be a problem...horses drink out of puddles!
