College scares me!

Where will I put my horse?

I am going to be a senior and graduate this coming school year, I've already got college all planned out and where I'm going.

UMaine is my school of choice, I'm not sure if they have boarding up there.

I'm scared, where will I board my horse if the campus doesn't have boarding? The school is 5 hours from where I live, and if I can't move my horse my mom will take care of him seeing as how we both equally care for and ride my horse, so I wouldn't have to sell him, but I would love to be able to ride him regularly.

I'm thinking I could look for barns near the campus to board, but then there's the other wall, my mom pays for board, I could never financially be able to board our horse myself. What can I do?

College gals with horsies? What do you do?

Wellll I'm going to college this year! Hah I know my school has an equine facility, but I'm not keeping benny there. I worked out with a barn in the area to keep him at that barn and in exchange for board (so I'm not scrambling for money) I am going to help train the youngsters and help feed and clean every day! :) try and find barns in the area! Its a great idea to bring them with you! I can't imagine not seeing ben everyday! Goodluck!

I left both my horses at home for college. For one thing, it was too expensive. For another, it was too far (16 hours). And for third, college is supposed to be one time in your life to be young and (mostly) carefree. If I took my boys to college I would be at the barn every evening/weekend. Instead I needed the time to go make lasting memories with new friends and be a young person without the stress of worrying about the boys.
I come home for 4 months. Those 4 months leave me more then enough time to train & compete my horse, and we're closer then ever. It would be nice to have my horses at school but I have no regrets about going to school where I did and not being able to take them with me.

You bring up a good point kmacdougall, and I would only be 5 hours away so visiting wouldn't be so much of a huge deal, [quite the drive, but worth it ] and if my mom didn't pay for board I would NEVER be able to afford it myself, so it's probably best my boy stays with the more financially stable one, my mom.
