The new little mare I plan to buy is 4 but just an excellent little trail horse. Several of us at my barn are thinking of trying competitive trail competitions near by next summer... anyone here do Competitive Trail? What kinds of obstacles are commonly seen? What all would you recommend as far as training for it?
I have no illusions of winning.. but it sounds like a fun 'task' for the winter months, and a good 'group' activity for our barn.
Taking suggestions!!

Most if not all of the obstacles should be natural ones that you would encounter on a typical trail ride. Walk through a stream, jump a log, walk over branches, put on a slicker, WTC, walk over a bridge, climb a hill, descend a hill, loading in a trailer saddled, walk past a herd of cattle... Conditioning is very important as fitness is part of the scoring as well. Being able to ride by yourself is important.

I loved doing competitive trail as a kid. My mare wasn't the best put together and my tack was utilitarian but we kicked *** here. Don't sell yourself or her short.
