Disturbing Batman Comics

Sorry if this has already come to light on here- I was unable to use the search feature for some reason.

I just found out about an artist, Scott Snyder, who works on the Batman series of comics for DC Comics. (No, I'm not into that stuff- I just discovered it on a random Google search.)

He claims to hate horses, which isn't the problem I have with this. Everyone has the right to his or her own opinions. What disturbs me is that he has depicted several horses in his comics being tortured and/or killed in gruesome ways. Again, I have no problem with his right to artistic expression, either...but 'Batman' is commonly read by kids and young adults who may think it would be funny to REALLY hurt an animal because "Batman (or some other character in the series) did it".

And yes, there really are people out there who thinks it's fun to copy violence in games, movies and other such media. Most people are sensible enough not to act out scenes from stuff like this, but you never can tell anymore.

Horses aren't the issue here with me, either. I'd be just as bothered if dogs, cats, or other domestic animals were being targeted. Abuse of animals is all too real in our world, and it shouldn't be encouraged and taken lightly by popular media. Period!

Really. I don't care. I visit numerous comic shops weekly. Most of my friends are comic book nerds, and they are most of the people I hang out with. No avid Batman reader I have met has expressed any animosity towards me when they fun out I have horses. There is no snickering about what happened to horses in any of the comics. I have to admit, though. The frame where batman punches the horse so hard it sends the rider flying is hilarious.

And what about Magic Cards? Gatecrash just came out and ther are some cards with BRUTAL artwork. Come to think of it, ALL sets have some pretty graphic cards. I know I have seen some horses being killed horribly. Surely this causes some kind of suggestive subliminal nonsense that might create a serial killer...or not.

World of Warcraft just introduced Pet Battles in the game. Shall we boycott them as a message against dog fighting?

If we are doing that, we should boycott or ban Pokemon too. Sending a Zebriska up against a Reshiram is just cruel.

Warhammer simulates all out war. Should we really be encouraging this kind of god-like behavior?

Nerds, even the legitimately well armed scary-looking ones, are going to be less effected by this nonsense than the common folk of this realm.

I think people need to quit looking for things to be offended by. The people who would take "This is okay!" from a comic book was not right to begin with.

This is what happens when Batman gets second place at a horse show.

I *know* we have met that ONE person at the barn that we hate SO much that you wanted to do this to.

Then don't buy your kids Batman comics. Don't like violent games and media for kids ? Don't buy it for them or let them watch it. Stop expecting the government to do Parents job. Attitudes like that are sending this country down the crapper.

A crazy person will use anything as an excuse to do crazy person behavior. Right minded people are not lulled into violence by a picture.

Blame the crazy, not the excuse.

I feel like this is the exact same thing as the whole "Video games cause kids to shoot up schools" debate, but with comics. I don't put any merit into it at all. If parents don't like it, they can always screen what their kids read and watch and explain to them that while it's this way in a book/comic/game it's fantasy and isn't okay in real life.

Lol, I am reading this thread as I re-watch Batman and the Redhood, Joker just got done taking out some bodyguards and ending it with a (morbidly hilarious) joke.

Comics are graphic, and most are not really for younger children anymore. Perhaps you should talk to your son so that he understands this sort of violence is not realistic and for imaginary work only, or maybe take them away until he is older and more mature to handle it. :) Side note, I love the punching a horse makes a rider fly out like that, that's just silly

This is not even remotely among the most disturbing thing published in comments these days. Again, disturbed individuals will find an excuse...or not even need one...to do unpleasant things.

And if you have kids, another vote here for screening their reading materials if you're worried. Or just don't buy it. ;)

Everything about comic books is completely fictional. Even human anatomy. Comics have some extreme violence in them with gory and very detailed fights. Its just the way they are. Blood, guts, violence.

ANY comic is going to have violence in it, pretty much guaranteed. Unless you want to petition DC Comics to, well, stop making comics, you're out of luck.
