Do Anyone Else Hate This?

I hate it when I'm at a gymkhnana and a person runs and people on the sidelines are screaming things at the person riding, like "bring him in!","GOGOGO!", "KICK HIM!" and "GET HIM GOING!".
I just hate it. Like in the gymkhana critique vids even on here, ou can here the people screaming that. It just annoys the heck outta me. Sorry, but yelling instruction is not gonna get that rider to be more succesful! Unless its at home, not at a competition!
And I hate it when the person is just whipping their horse to high heavens when coming back. its not going to make it go faster when its maxed out already!
Anyone else get me? Or is it just me? :) lol

I do see your point!! I am not a huge fan of yelling, but when people are yelling out stuff to encourage the rider, (some of us may need a little boost now and then) then I think its completely reasonable.

but these arent encouragments. I would also love to hear the "WOOHOO"S!"
I'm talking about the shouts from those people that are just screaming "WHIPE HER!" or "KICKKICKKCIK!" and just being obnoxious.

Why? I'm verbal, when I see friends or people I board with at my barn doing a Jumping comp, riding with their shoulders dropped, upper bodies leaning forward, hands dropped, looking down - whatever, I'll shout out at them reminding them to correct themselves.

Heck I just did it tonight when I was riding during a lesson going on around me. Not my student, not that I care - I saw faults and I helped her correct herself, and guess what - she had a 10x better ride when I was shouting out at her, than she did the ride before when I didn't say pip.

At sanctioned competition it is strictly forbidden to 'coach' from the sidelines. "Illegal" coaching will get a rider disqualified and quickly, without a lot of fanfare or polite forgiveness.

Cheering is a different thing but we are so well trained in not speaking at ring- side, the cheers are reserved for after the rider exits. Then we carry on excessively at the awards ceremonies. Dancing on the table is required : )

It's all about perspective. A tightly wrapped judge with a cold/late cup of coffee and dull pencil can take it as coaching, if they are inclined, and enough do. Other disciplines and events are more relaxed. I personally have no issue with audible support (unless I have to, I am a stewie) but have been in situations at certain levels of competition where the judge or steward has decided that it was disruptive. It is their option.

Behind the scene, these simple cheerful gestures can make life difficult for most involved IF someone complains officially: class is delayed, that in itself is an act of Congress, nevermind reopening. Judge is now cranky(er) and has probably had to pee for an hour already, stewie is frustrated and walking gingerly with new anal orifice just created by afore mentioned cranky judge then subsequently loaded with incident report duties in triplicate while overseeing the 10 x 10 warm-up ring with a cloud of BN locusts in it, TD doesn't have time at the moment to deal with it and is three miles away at the water complex on a broken down atv anyway, secretary can't find the original entry among the 40 pre-entries' and 60 post-entries' forms for records keeping of the incident, show manager is screaming about the walk-ins and can't hear the secretary cos the walkie isn't working (ha!usually due to a wrong channel), farm owner is running away fast in the OPPOSITE direction to check insurance and liabilities, rider is confused and PO'd (won't even mention the St Vitus dancing parent/trainer/coach), ground jury is in 17 different locations and the original cheerleader is long gone. And the horse could care less, grazes on : )

I really wish it wasn't like this but it is. It IS a sport for Pete's sake, not an inquisition. I also know that many English disciplines and their rules can be a bit stuffy in comparison to Western. Tis the biz, labour of love : )

Ah ha ha ha -

My Husband is going to bring a foam finger and a cowbell to my first HT - rofl. He swears he is going to be on the side lines ringing the bell, waving his foam finger and be shouting at me:

"WOOOT GO KIM!! YEAH!! THAT WAS AN AWESOME 20 METER CIRCLE!! YEAAAHH BABY!!"

"OH YEAH!! WOOT WOOT! SHOW THEM HOW TO DO A DOWNWARD TRANSITIONS! BOO YEAH!"

"YEAH!!! NICE SQUARE HALT!! UH HUH!!! OH YEAH BABY!"

ROFL!

I'm going to kill him if he actually does it!

~~~
im sorry if this is about my critique video:sad: i know their is a person(my friend) yelling all these things to me but if it means anything when im in the arena i block out everything but my horse and i and i focus on him and the pattern...and the only reason i use my over and under at the end is because he tends to slow a few strides before the timer...but i don't use it the whole time.....:oops:
You know what Phantom - even if this thread is due to your video, who gives a flying leap what the OP and others think? So?!?! What does that have anything to do with you? It is just an opinion, and if others doesn't like it, they can go stick it in their ear and then some.
You have no reason to be emberassed, nor do you have any reason to appologize for what goes on at YOUR shows and YOUR comps.
If some don't like it and have an opinion on the matter, that's their problem, not yours. Tough titty said the kitty :)
You keep doing what you're doing. Ride on and have fun.
The over and under thing, yeah - needless, but then again, those who are quick to point their fingers, I bet they do things to their horses that they are ashamed of.
Crap happens - if you feel bad about it, then fix it.
I hate sideline coached, especially at gymkhana. Most people are like in Phantoms video(and no hon, we are not bashing what YOU did in the video, do not be embarrassed, you were fine, but I do mean to use your friend as sort of an example, no offense to you at all though) how the girl is yelling for her to pretty much be a bad rider. I get this a lot when I barrel. I get people screaming at me to kick and whip(I do not carry a crop or over and under, don't need one, my horses are trained off seat thank you lol) the whole run. Even when I win, and often that is the case, hehe, they come up to me asking why I didn't kick and saying I would have been faster if I would have... I just turn my rump(or mu horses lol) and walk away. I get what you mean op, I hate when people shout for me to be a bad rider.
And MIeventer, reminds me of Sylvester, when she gets done and Mr. Foster and the boys are all clapping and whooping for Charlie and the snooty guy tells them how it is customary to wait, they look at him, and then continue to whoop and cheer...lmbo
EXACTLY! And no, I'm no talking about your vid specifically! Don't be embarrased! :) I'm jsut talking about what I also hear when I go to the barrel races! :)
Yeah, those people are pretty annoying. Unfortunately, many times those are the same people who are teaching the kids at home how to spur with every stride while using an over/under with all their strength. Too many don't understand that that action will not get the horse to run any faster than if you just applied steady leg pressure and leaned forward a little bit. It may actually be slowing them down because I can't imagine the horse is able to really stretch out if he is getting jabbed in the ribs every stride. Shoot, all I have to do is squeeze just a bit and if it is really urgent, I will hiss at them and they go from 0 to 900 in about 3 feet. I feel that what they are calling for the rider to do (pullpull, kickkick, whipwhip) is completely pointless. That is one reason why so many gaming horses act like freaked out spazoids. They are either being spurred and whipped or having their head yanked on.
Just a funny sidenote though. The last event of any kind that I went to was my niece's 4H show. One little boy that was about 8 or 9 got a little overzealous with his spurs at the start of his flag run. His horse went to bucking with him and he never even grabbed the saddle horn. All I heard out of the stands then was "Woooooo!! Ride Him!! and Stick With Him!!" That was really cool and the kid ended up riding out the whole thing.
I think it's annoying, but I'm so used to hearing it at games and barrels that I'd be really weirded out if people stopped. Besides, when I get in the arena, you can yell as loud as you want and I can never hear anything till I'm done my run. It's all in good fun and at least spectators are getting into it (good advice or not).
Yeah I get annoyed if they say annoying stuff like "whip him!", "use your spurs", etc.
However, I have nothing against shouting encourangements. In fact, I'd love it if you were allowed to do that during dressage tests. "Way to change that lead!" or "whoohoo"ing at a side pass. Lol, it'd be great and would make dressage so much more fun. I hate that you have to wait to clap until the ending of the test. Boring.
