I always though my guy would be bigger- he's a 15.2 QH, and not overly stocky, but solid and he's only a 75". He's got a pretty short back though- you'd be surprised how much that back length is the deciding factor rather than height or chunkiness, which makes them 'look' big. I can see 81" without an issue in many horses, there's a reason they're one of the common sizes! What size I would guess a horse is and what they actually are nearly never match up. That said, I'm glad you checked. As you know, measure twice, buy once! :)

Here's a video that shows how to measure for a blanket:

I think if you measured the way the video describes it would be fairly hard to screw up.

Just to give a rough idea ...
My pony weighs about 850lbs, maybe more like 900lbs, is 13.3h and always fits a 69".
My other mare is 17.3h, haven't weighed her in ages but she was 1200lbs when she was underweight, and generally fits an 86" ..probably should have gone with an 88" for the sheet I just ordered though.

Personally, I would wait until you can measure again, but like I said above I doubt you screwed up THAT much. =)

From what you said, I would guess a 74 to 76 so I would definitely remeasure.

    I have a 14.2 gelding that is a 76, a 15.2 Gelding that is also a 76 and then I have a 14.3 mare that is a 74... A 15.2 mare that is a 78 and a 16 hand gelding that is an 82.... It all depends on the build...
