Last Saturday my usually bombproof horse spooked in cross ties due to a scooter coming directly at him. He slipped, reared, etc.
Fast forward to today, Lucky was tied with a single rope in a spot he normally isn't tied in as the barn was very crowded. I saddled him up and stretched his front leg as we always stretch both legs before riding. I set it down, lifted my head and he was suddenly sitting on the ground, panicking because his head wouldn't move (halter didn't break) and he couldn't get his feet back under him. I didn't see any signs of spooking, nothing and it was very sudden.
Could he have just lost his balance? Is that normal? He's been checked by a vet and farrier and he is sound... also what can I do to prevent this in the future? It really freaked us both out. I understand the previous event. He spooked. Any horse can spook but this one mystifies me.
He's such a good calm horse normally...
