I was talking to my friend a few days ago, and she was talking about how she and her riding buddies like to go trail riding and drink. (Drinking, I mean alcohol.) She told me about a bunch of times when she was totally smashed while she was riding. Some of my dad's friends have horses and they like to drink and ride/drive wagons too.
I'm not against drinking, and of course I'm not against riding, I just personally have never tried them together. It seems like a great way to fall and get hurt to me, though it does make for some humorous stories.
What do you think about drinking and riding? Do you do it? Have you done it?
I dont know what the American laws are like but over here in Ireland it's illegal to be under the influence on a horse because you're "operating a moving vehicle". Same goes for if you're in a wheelchair or a scooter  I've had a few drinks while out with the horses but I didn't get wasted, god knows what you might try, I'm bad enough sober
When I was with a crew up in another state, we'd have a flask or two of southern comfort to keep the cold away.
.. that was after we stuffed our saddle bags with beer.
The bad thing about drinking and riding, is having to pee. Getting up and down on your horse on the trail is a Pain in the ****.
It does make you braver though. Stupid too occasionally.
I prefer to be drunk thats when im not chicken and have the courage to ride. LOL, but I dont do it cause I dont want to get out there and fall off and hurt myself with my kids at home in bed. I dont drink in front of my kids. My husband was drunk one night and he took our mustang to subway about 3 miles from our house. We live in a small town and in the gas station is a subway he just tied her up and went in to get a sandwhich they are open 24 hrs and it was around 1am he found out his cousin worked there so the whole family heard about it and now he is dubbed as the drunk cowboy. Its not the first time he has done that and im sure not the last. Im not that gutsy thats to far to go when drunk to much can go wrong. LOL I guess im getting old:lol:
Never drink while riding, and hate drunk trail riders. I guess I'm a snob... But a beer or glass of wine or two after riding is more my style. Every barn has a drunk, I mean a serious alcoholic, and those people can be a real pain. Also, I am "older" and I would be really mad at myself if I got an injury because I was riding tipsy!
I'm not against a beer or two... but at my old barn there was a group of trail riders who would go out with saddle bags full of beer, and were constantly getting drunk on the trails. They would bring their two misbehaving dogs with them, and then got too tipsy to take control of any of there animals. Watching them ride reminded me of the bad old westerns. Spur the horse forward, yank him back when you loose balance, etc. Their dogs drove me NUTS. They would be in the arena chasing my horse while I was lunging! Luckily my horse wasn't phased, and if they got in the way he wasn't stopping.
On there way through the trails they would ride by many pastures and there dogs would go running chasing horses in those too! Then one day, while I was training my puppy to behave on leash at the barn and around horses, she came galloping up with a beer in hand, and nearly ran OVER my puppy and started slurring about how, "You should take that dog off leash while you can.... I heard the barn owners going to make us have leashes on all the time! Can you believe it! Dogs and horses were made to be together!", all the while her dog headed off to the pasture where an injured horse was turned out.
I just shook my head and walked away.
Obviously if you're going to be responsible and not get carried away it's fine... but my experiences with 'drinking and riding' haven't been very positive.
