What careers in the equine industry have remained the strongest during our economic downturn? In times like these when fewer people are purchasing horses, what are some ideas on where the industry is heading? What are some opinions on future job outlooks?

The smaller equine veterinary practices in my area are flourishing. The larger equine clinics aren't doing as well, and some of my neighbors are trimming their own horse's feet (farriers not doing so well...?). Lessons are too expensive for lots of people...pretty much the entire equine industry is hurting.

I wonder why the larger equine clinics aren't doing as well? And ya I suppose there are quite a few people resorting to trimming their own horses' feet now to cut costs too. Do you think that low end race tracks are hurting too? I wonder if people are doing a lot less breeding all across the U.S. Or just in certain areas?

I recently toured the new University of Minnesota Equine Hospital, and there were five horses in the entire place (they had at least 30 stalls). Their prices are too high, and the veterinarians are usually nicer (and more reasonable priced) at the smaller practices. When I toured Anoka Equine (also in Minnesota), they were nearly full with horses on a Tuesday.

I work next door to a racing TB breeder, and I didn't see any babies this year. Not sure if it was due to the economy or personal reasons...now that I think about it, I haven't seen many foals at all.
