I am adopting a new horse, she has been fed hay and feed for the last 8 months, no pasture grass, when I get her she will become a pasture horse, now will she still need hay and feed on a daily occurance, or should I slowly ween her off the hay and just give her feed, or will she be ok with just pasture (which is only 2 acres with 3 other horses) or should I still give her the same amount of hay and feed, even though she will be pastured. Thanks
What I would do in your situation is slowly let her get used to the grass, don't just let her go out & eat eat eat when she's not used to it because she can founder! What you should do after she is ok with eating grass all day is cut her grain & hay suply to about half what your giving her now.
I would agree that a slow weaning onto grass is a very good idea. However, I would also say that once she is fully weaned a smaller supplementary forage feed and possibly concentrates would be a good idea as there is only 2 acres between 4 horses - half the recomended.
The amount of course would vary depending on work volume and quality of the grass. You may find at times of the year (particularly winter) that you will have to feed practically all concentrates and forage as grass is likely to be practically non-existant.
