...things are looking up. I know most of you won't care, but there seem to be a few of you who consistently post in my "help me!" threads (coincidence?), so I just thought I'd let you know how things are going.
I've completely gone back to step 1 with my mare. Just lots of simple, relaxed walks at the same pace as I move with my sister's young filly. She's so much calmer; it's incredible. She almost never gets all concerned about cars and such moving off in the distance-she just follows behind me with her head down as we go for walks across the property. I haven't rode for quite a while, mostly just 'cause I don't have time, but I'm hoping this will make things a little more manageable when I'm on her, and hopefully clear the slate for what's to come.
She was never bad before, but things were tense, high-energy, and...well, not good previously, and she was starting to just become a basket case because I was always pushing her without stopping to ask what she was ready for. A few nights ago, when she reared up (I wasn't on her, thankfully!) as she spooked at a passing vehicle, I realized that I needed to do an overhaul and tone it down a notch or several, to just go back to what we're already comfortable with, and slowly rebuild from there.
I know I'll go through a lot more downs before this is all through, but for now, I feel really happy. Even the weather is just absolutely perfect-sunny, mild, and the snow is melting (though not fast enough for there to be huge, gross mud puddles everywhere). For now, for the next few days or even weeks at least, everything is just about perfect.
