Hello from Assateague Island! I'm posting to let Horse Forum members know about a unique opportunity to help give a name to one of the wild horses of Assateague Island National Seashore.

The Assateague Island Alliance is a non-profit that was created to benefit the National Seashore and is dedicated to ensuring that the pristine island park has the additional resources it needs to support educational programs, and assure stewardship of resources while encouraging high quality resource-compatible recreation activities.

We are facilitating a charitable auction to give names to the four brand-new foals born on Assateague Island this year! You can provide a lasting tribute to a loved one or give a rare and unique "living gift" that will stay with a horse through its life on the Island.

Our hope is that these fund-raising initiatives on the Internet will provide a creative pathway for the Assateague Island Alliance to educate people who have not yet visited the Island, and will allow old friends to stay in touch with the fauna, flora, and especially the wild Assateague horses.

Check our website or visit the eBay auction site for more information! (NAMING RIGHTS FOR WILD ASSATEAGUE ISLAND FOAL N9BFQ-G - eBay (item 320319669501 end time Dec-08-08 11:58:00 PST))

Thank you!

Yes, Wild Spot, Assateague Island was in the Misty books! It's a beautiful place and absolutely worth a visit if you're ever in the area...

Our first auction was a success, with the winning bid going to an elementary school class in New Jersey. More info is below.

The second auction is now underway. Please check it out!
Foal Auction 2

Second Graders bring Harmony to Assateague Island

Berlin, Maryland- Assateague Island National Seashore is proud to
announce the naming of a 2008 Sorrel Filly N9BFQ-G now known as Harmony.
The proud parents are second graders of Mrs. Lane’s class from Harmony
Elementary School in Middletown, New Jersey. The auction, conducted on
eBay, was for the benefit of the National Seashore’s new Friend’s Group
the Assateague Island Alliance.This Alliance is a 501c (3) non-profit
organization whose mission is to support Assateague Island National
Seashore. This is the first time this event has taken place, and to get
school children involved is truly exciting. The newly named foal will
be introduced into the foster horse program starting in mid-January 2009
and will carry that name for the rest of its wild and free life.
