I am a sentimental person myself, and I would want to keep the papers. If he were still alive, I'd say that maybe doing a blood test, as I know some of the registries require that the breeding stallions at least have a bloodtyping thing on paper, so they can guarantee that a horse being registered is really by the stallion the owners say it is by. I would definitely try the old vet papers, that may be your best bet atm.
