The first day at the trainer....

Well after last week and feeling like I wanted to give up and sell my 3 1/2 year old I took him to the trainer for an "assessment" of his skills and abilities and to determine how much training I need to send him for. I was thinking 30-45 days for a start. I trailered him down to the trainer and he put Mocha through his paces starting from the very beginning on the ground with everything, all the way up to tacking up, working with tack on and then mounting and riding. He rode mocha at the walk, trot and lope. He was quite balanced and has a good stop. He also taught him very quickly to slide up to the fence to be mounted. He said I had done really well with him and was impressed. I spent about 4 hours there today listening to him telling me what he was seeing, what he was doing and why. So there isn't going to be 30 days training as I am going to just trailer him down a couple of days a week to work more with the trainer and then after about 6 sessions I will be riding and getting instruction from him. I was so impressed with Mocha how clam, cool and collected (sometimes literally) he was. He did what he was asked to do, no buck, kicks, and was very attentive and willing to please. He also just hopped up into the trailer going and coming home no problem, which I had not trailered him for about 10 months or so. I feel so good about how it went today just wanted to share!

Sometimes you just need an outside perspective. Glad it is working out for you and that yo will be involved in the training. You'll learn a lot.

Yes it was good to hear another person's perspective and opinion, especially one I respect.
