Question First horse; How tall??

I'm 15 years old and approximately 5'4. I've been riding horses for over 7 years, but have never had the opportunity to own one of my own. However, I've recently acquired the necessary fundage, resources, and proper boarding location and am super stoked to finally purchase a horse of my own. =) My only dilemma is, what is the appropriate height for a horse for a girl of my age and height? I've heard that when you stand next to the horse on a level surface, your nose should just be level with the horse's back. Has anyone else heard this? Suggestions would be sweet.

Well, what size (and girth) of horses have you been riding? What's most comfortable? I'd say let experience be your guide.

Just get something you are comfortable with. My first horse was 15.1hh and I was much shorter than 5' but I feel better on bigger horses. I am only 5' tall now and have a 15.3hh horse.

Green Broke
My first horse was 14.3 my second was 15.1 or 15.2 and the horse I ride now is 15.2/15.3

Whatever height horse you feel most comfortable riding at. Personally if your are afraid of heights (like I was) id get something between 14.2-15hh

But if your not then id get something between 15 and 16.3 hh.
Its preferably whatever you'd like.

My first horse is 15.3 hands
I perfer a horse that is as tall as me or taller (wither height wise), but it depends on each person

I'm only 5'2 and my horse is just over 16hh.
I don't think it really matters, just go with whatever you're comfortable with.

My first pony was about 14hh. My first horse was 15'2hh. She was a good mare I learned a lot from. The tallest horse I've owned was 16'2hh.

16.3 and a half, still have him! Only owned him since march so I don't have any intentions of getting rid of him any time soon, he's my big fat 17 year old not so much of a baby baby lol and he will be with me foreveer!

Uhm shannon, it doesn't matter aboiut the size of horse, it is temperament!! I am only 13, and jet is a big strong boy, and he is my first horsem, I learnt everything I know on him, had no horse experience before him! We took a gamblke with him and we definitely scored a beautiful kind natured gelding that I love to bits! (i recently got a 15hh galloway that I can learn to jump on aswell)

My horse is 16.2 hh and I'm about 5'3. I would say just go with what you're comfortable with. You're not very tall, so you don't have to worry. You could anywhere around 15 hh up to 17hh, its your comfort level.

Oh and congrats on being able to purchase a horse!!

I'm 5'10" and my first horse is 15.1hh
And I have another that is 15.2hh
And another I ride is 16.1hh
I guess I feel more proportioned riding the 16.1hh, but I've been riding my 15.1hh mare for years and I feel perfectly fine with it. I can her bareback at a full out run better than any other horse.
