I should also add that we have raised 15+ foals and only one was not straight. We watch closely to see if they are developing an issue that we can fix with a quick trim or rasp.

Just a quick rasping to round their hooves off, even them up or take a minor amount off until about 6 months old. Keeping their angles correct and their hooves even has been easy with just a quick rasp job here and there IF needed. After six months I've noticed that they kick it in enough to require a trim every 8 weeks when our farrier is out for the rest of the herd.

If it were my foal, I'd have the farrier do a light rasp as often as possible, just to get the foal used to it. However it would be the most minimal amount removed possible each time.

I start early with mine but it's pretty much practice for the real thing when they need it. They just get rasped a bit, get used to the farrier, see all the new things he brings with him, etc. The first true trim usually happens once they've been weaned and then they are every 5 weeks with the rest of the gang if it's needed. If not, we let them go a couple more weeks and my farrier will pop in when he's in my area and take care of it.
