Hi Everyone, just wanted to get something off my chest.

I am a young rider and have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to teach some local kids how to ride. I've ridden and trained under some bigger names, and I have taught some of their beginner kids when they didn't have time. I feel pretty well taught, and I don't think I'm a poor horseman, even though I do have my moments.

The other weekend I took two of my more capable riders to a local horse show. We practice a lot and have done shows bigger than that will much success. Granted, we don't have the resources that the other riders have. I am a beginning trainer and money is tight with the local girls. We don't have the resources, horses, etc. to be as competitive and I know that. We really just wanted to get a good experience out of it and build upon what we are working on.

Turns out the judge hired was extremely incompetent and placed my rider first in two classes, ahead of riders on much nicer, better trained ponies. (Remember this is a two-foot BEGINNER hunter class) I knew that the placing was off, but I was proud of my student. We had worked on riding correct corners all month and I saw her put in a big effort. It was a nice reward, even if it was unwarranted in comparison to the other riders. Well, knowing trainers, everyone started talking.

I heard from a friend at another barn, who was also there, that trainers had been bashing me and saying that my girls shouldn't be training under me and that I am incompetent. They really have been around for a while, and I have always respected these trainers. This news really disappointed me. I feel like my girls were competent to ride the courses, and they work really hard to be able to play with those kids. I refuse to take this personally (though I did at first) but I can hardly ignore the reputable people who talk about me. What should I do with this news?

I'm sorry it's so long, thanks for reading.

I'd make it a point to tell the bashing trainers that you are aware that your girls' wins weren't appropriate, but that you weren't about to cause an unnecessary/inappropriate scene by telling the judges that they were wrong! That's the truth, & it'd show them that you are competent & wisely didn't humiliate the judges. If there's something further you should do about the incompetent judges (reporting to authorities), then you must follow through to restore proper judging at your shows.
