gate sour

ALright so my friend has a appendix qh gelding can't remember his age at the moment though. They have one of the best bonds in my area and they have come sooo far in 3 1/2 years since she first got him he was an unruly gelding and she got him running AAA times in gymkhana but he has become increasingly gate sour. He only runs the patterns 2 times a month and has 2 regular lessons every month besides the gymkhana lesson she also does endurance and trail riding with him. Last week she took him to a lesson and couldn't even get him into the arena he bucked reared planted his feet and she's worried that she will have to sell him if she can't find a way to get him out of it. Before if another horse that he liked led him in he was fine or if a person was lucky enough he would let you lead him but now he's completely gate sour once in the arena he is fine but getting him in is a VERY dangerous thing.
SOOOO I want to ask you guys if you have any opinions on any ways to help her out??

I should include that the 2 gymkhana times are the competition and the lesson then 2 regular lessons usually consisting of collection, seat and various other things our trainer can think of for that particular lesson they are different each time
