Getting info from a vet??

Have had my boy for almost 3 years now, and the gal I got him from told me she 'lost' the contact info on him so had no history, nothing on him. ( the gal I got him from only had him a few months before deciding he was not going to work for her...) I figured maybe she got him off Craigslist or something and let it go, figuring I would never know anything about him. ( but seeing little glimmers of some show history...) He has some lameness issues that I would like to know about as well, such as how long he has been having the issues, what was tried before...

ANYHOW... I mentioned to the gal I got him from ( a coworker ) that I wished I even knew what Area he was from ( not a lot of large animal vets around... so maybe I could find out which was used..) and lo and behold.. she suddenly remembered who and where she got him. ( still no address or phone # but at least a name and city... and a mutual coworker knows who the gal is...and is trying to contact her for me...)

Long story short... but now that I have a name, and I am assuming used the same equine vets we do ( like I said.. not many to chose from!) I wondered if the vet would be able to get me any info. Or is it like people and they wont give you medical history without a release? ANy ideas?
I am going to ask the vet when he comes for the well-horse check up this week, but wondered if anyone has tried to get a medical history on a horse they bought before? Would be great if we could 'blend' his medical charts-

Highly unlikely that any vet (even if it was your regular vet) could or would release information on another horse. Always worth a try. The worst thing he can say is no. If he was willing to offer up information and it was your regular vet, more than likely it would of happened a long time ago.

I tried that a few years back for Lacey, with the vet that had treated her for her entire life, and that vet said that unless I could get the previous owner to sign an information release form, I was out of luck.
Unfortunately for me, Lacey's previous owner had already disappeared like she never existed so no medical records for me. :(

The rules for vet records vary from state to state. In NC, the owner of the animal is entitled to a copy of the animal's records.

You might find rules vary from state to state but generally speaking you need permission from whoever paid for any Vet attention to access records.
If the Vet has details of the owner then maybe they could put you in touch with them or contact them on your behalf to ask for their permission

Perhaps in general, but not in NC. Here, vet records are "owned" by the vet and the "client" is the animal.

Youve had the animal 3 years, I would think any old records wouldnt be worth much. You need a fresh exam.

Oh, I don't expect the info to be current but I would like to know if he had any previous injuries, foundered, colicked etc. At least I would know where to start on him. Im hoping the previous owner gets in touch with me... but at least it would be something... I will let you know what the vet says.... and if nothing else, maybe the vet could look at his old records ( even if he did not release them to me...)

Odd... I called the vet for my horse, to ask if she'd had any issues. I specifically asked for vaccination records. I didn't get permission from the previous owner, or the barn owner that was keeping her.
They sent me 10 years worth of vaccinations and vet records from her barn! Lol!
