Default Going to a horse auction tomorrow :(

I'm going with a bunch of people (Barn owner, friends, Head of the rescue I volunteer for, and a bunch of volunteers) to a local horse auction tomorrow in Unadilla NY. This auction runs once a month in the winter and usually 70 - 100 horses run through it. Horses at this auction have sold for as little as $5 in the past! It's a notorious slaughter auction, and while a few nice horses run through it, the majority of horses are skin and bones, very ill, or old and untrained.

My barn owner is letting me and 2 friends each pick out a horse to save if we help with vet bills and such! Very fair! I'm on the lookout for a pregnant mare, save 2 lives for the price of one! I will let everyone know what we come home with!

The place where I ride has quite a few horses that have come from the Unadilla auction. Of course a few of them have their quirks but more have been used in lessons. Update us on what you find!

When you choose a horse choose one that will be cost effective to get ready to sell. A young gelding would be much easier to get trained and resold toa good home.

The only problem I see: You dont get to vet these horses before they come home. You could be looking at thousands in vet bills.

That is so exciting! You are very lucky to get to buy a horse that way!

That is so great that your doing that! We have an auction similar to that around here, I'm looking into it. Hope you do find a pregnant mare, and good luck with them!
