I am so happy with this past week! I have accomplished a lot with the horses I own and ride.
First off, with a horse I ride regularly (but do not own), I have started bareback and bridleless riding!!! I have been working up to no bridle or halter on, and have done so 2 times. Today was the second time, Thursday was the first. I finally had the guts to take off any head restraint he had on (in this case I was using my new belt headstall) and I just tied the reins around his neck so I had SOMETHING to control him if he were to act up... but he did not and was perfect. This horse is coming 6 and a 15.2 hh (approximately) quarter horse gelding.
Secondly... I sat on my palomino mare Promise for the first time ever! She was amazing! It took her some time to get the concept of standing still (without me pulling on the reins) and I would just dangle over her until she would stop, then I would slide off! Eventually, after she understood what I was trying to do, she would square herself up and stand perfectly still, and I eventually slid my leg over so I was actually sitting. I did this twice, sitting up there for a few seconds, then getting down. I left it at that. Next time I get on her, I will be walking her around, some turns, maybe trot a little bit... let her get use to my weight. We don't have an indoor roundpen, and the one outside is filled with snow and mud. We do have a fairly small (but large enough to get some speed going) 3 sided covered arena we are using.
Just thought I would share my success' with all you!
