Guilt when your vet turns out to be dodgy

A few years back, I hired a vet to come and do some work on my horse. He was recommended by someone I rode with at the time so I trusted that he would do a good job.

On the day though, he turned out to be nothing like that. He was terrible. He was very old school, was rough and hurt my horse :-( He did his teeth and cut his mouth in the process because he was rough  He also treated his back for sore muscles and was not gentle at all then did some chiropractic work.

To this day I feel a horrible sinking feeling in my belly about that day. I hired someone in good faith and they hurt my horse. My horse is very very old and trusts me to look after him. He's one of those horses who loads without a hassle and can be caught by anyone. He's so trusting of people and I let someone hurt him

Has this happened to anyone else? How do I get past the guilt?

By the way, I reported the vet, but I still feel really bad.

Chiropractic work can sometimes look rough when it really is not.

And there is no way to do teeth with out some blood. Heck, my dentist makes me bleed and he is not rough, etc.

Maybe this vet really was not as bad as you are making it out to be in your mind.

I agree with AB - chiro may look rough but in fact it's not. Plus horses are not all that fragile, and often what is too much for human is just a pleasant scratch for the horse. I can't comment on teeth though, as folks I used were very gentle - I dont' remember seeing any blood... And just wondering - was the horse sedated before the work?

Hi Kitten_Val, No he wasn't sedated before the work. It was weird because every other time with different people he has been. This guy just backed the horse up to a fence and got started. The chiropractic work he said was kineaseology and that involved hitting my horse in the head he said, which he did. He said it was to reset lines in his body. The whole thing just felt wrong. I'm sorry if I'm not explaining it well. I don't explain things well often.

He was a travelling person, didn't have a clinic in town.

I reported him because what happened didn't feel right.
