The farrier was out the other day and part of the whole trimming experience includes handling the foals so that when they are ready to be trimmed, it won't be any big deal. He goes in and handles each foal, all over, then picks up their feet and taps on them and just generally gets them used to him and builds a little bit of a relationship with them.
Twoey had me rolling on the floor. She was very good, didn't fuss at all, but if she could have taken her eyeballs out and rolled them into a better position to see him, she'd have done it. She stuck her little chin on my shoulder and would roll her eye back toward him, as far as it would go so that I could barely see the blue. She'd curve her neck around so that he was in her eye the whole time and she 'sucked' her cheek in and held onto it like a nervous 3 yo toddler. Of course, by the time he was done, she was reveling in the attention and wanted to follow him out the door.
Chippy was also hilarious. Her mother, Patti, tends to stick her nose under my arm and hide her face in my armpit when she gets insecure, but since she's been an adult doesn't do that often. I know that Chip has never seen her do it. Sure enough, she's her mother's daughter, she stuck that little nose firmly in the crook of my arm and pushed her head under my armpit and didn't come out until he was done with the first leg. Then she would stick her chin on my shoulder and gently just "HUFF" in my ear to let me know she was just so over it all. She too was in love with him again by the end of the session and wanted more attention but those first few minutes......
This was their 3rd time to be handled by him and they are both being very cooperative and progressing nicely, but haven't seen a good reason for all the fuss. I just get a giggle out of watching them interact with new things/people/experiences. They're just so expressive.
